Just a short, cheap train ride from Tokyo, you can find yourself in the middle of a charming town in Saitama called Chichibu, where historical architecture, sacred spots, and a friendly community famous for its festivals add up to a relaxing escape from the city.
Join us for a chat about arriving at the station, strolling through town, and visiting a few of the area's oldest shrines, which happen to be some of the oldest in Japan as well. Getting to a mountaintop to take in a panoramic view is as easy as hopping on a gondola (at the ropeway to Hodosan Shrine in Nagatoro) or catching a local bus (departing Chichibu Station to Mitsumine Shrine).
The area is also packed with wonderful food producers, wineries, distilleries and breweries. We've become fans of Chichibu restaurant Cucina Salve for its deeply DIY sensibility and celebration of all things local.
